DANCING WITH PAINT My paintings generally begin with a random mark or brush stroke, which leads to added marks and brushstrokes. The dialogue continues as action-reaction and/or action-reflection. These marks and strokes are not directed toward representational imagery, but rather toward abstract structure, form, atmosphere, color field, energy, or unusual vision. This freedom to discover which direction to take is eventually revealed through the process. At some point the painting will show me what it wants to become. It will involve the application of layers of paint and many revisions before resolution occurs. My intention is to build a profound level of intrigue and depth. Music is a very important component in the studio. I enjoy all genres, however, the improvisational nature of jazz best complements my painting process. My goal is to offer a visual journey/experience for the viewer which is new, challenging and exciting. The painting has to surprise me as well. |
